10 Health Uses For Baking Soda

Baking soda is very uncomplicated, in fact, it only contains one ingredient, sodium bicarbonate. It is a naturally occurring substance that helps keep pH levels where they need to be to sustain life.

Because of its ability to reacts with an acid and become alkaline when mixed with water, baking soda can be used as a healing therapy for a number of conditions. Here are ten.

 

1. Reduce Ulcer Pain

Because baking soda can help neutralizes stomach acid, it’s one of the best for ulcers. So, drink a glass of water with 1-2 teaspoons of sodium bicarbonate to relieve symptoms.

2. Heartburn and Indigestion Relief

Most heartburn and indigestion options like Tums and Rolaids contain bicarbonate. This makes sodium bicarbonate a cost-effective remedy. Simply add half a teaspoon of baking powder to two cups of water. An hour after eating, drink this mixture to gain some relief.

3. Bug Bite Soother

Rub sodium bicarbonate on your bug bite to relieve the itching. You then have to create a paste with a teaspoon of baking soda and water to apply about three times a day until the bite dissipates.

4. Cancer Prevention

Sodium bicarbonate is known to increase the pH of acidic tumors without affecting the pH balance of healthy tissues and the blood. When you have a pH imbalance, unhealthy organisms are able to flourish, which damages tissues and organs, and compromises the immune system. Baking soda consumption can be used as a means of nutritional and immune support for people with cancer.

5. Itchy Skin Relief

Sodium bicarbonate can help to reduce discomfort from sunburn, allergic rashes, and skin affected by poison ivy or poison oak. Mix a teaspoon with some water to create a paste – then rub it on your skin.

6. Exercise Enhancer 

The baking soda benefits can change your exercise routine, too. It has the power to absorb the lactic acid that builds up in muscles during vigorous workouts, which can delay fatigue and enhance your athletic performance. You can consume baking soda by drinking a teaspoon with water.

7. Sunburn Relief 

Your fragile sunburned skin will benefit from soaking in a mixture of baking soda and water. Draw a warm bath and add half a cup of baking soda; you can also mix baking soda into your favorite body lotion.

8. Enhanced Sports Performance

Distance runners and swimmers engage in a practice known as “soda doping” — or taking baking soda capsules — before races to enhance performance. Because sodium bicarbonate increases the pH of the blood, it reduces and offsets the acidity produced in the muscles during intense, anaerobic exercise that produces lactic acid most quickly, such as fast running or swimming.

9. Oral Health

Sodium bicarbonate has a mild abrasive action that can help to clean, remove plaque and polish and deodorize your teeth. It also has antibacterial activity and can kill Streptococcus mutans bacteria – a significant contributor to tooth decay. Mix six parts of baking soda to one part of sea salt to form an  effective tooth and gum paste.

10. Improves Kidney Function 

Bicarbonate is an alkaline substance that the body naturally produces that buffers acids and helps keep pH in check. In people with chronic kidney disease, the poorly functioning kidneys have a hard time removing acid from the body. This often results in a condition known as metabolic acidosis. According to a British study, the sodium bicarbonate slows the rate of decline in kidney function by two-thirds. So, talk to your physician and encourage him to look into this promising therapy, which can slow the progression of this devastating disease.
