Class Descriptions

Yoga (Various Styles):

Hatha

All physical, posture-based yoga is called “Hatha” yoga. It may have several lineages and styles, depending on your desired outcome. Hatha means “Sun & Moon”, and aims at restoring your balance and natural Wellbeing.  In addition, it includes postures (asana), breathing (pranayama) and ends with a gentle relaxation.

Vinyasa

This is a more energetic, flowing form of Hatha yoga aimed at getting a very physical workout. Thus, leaving you refreshed, energized and yet deeply peaceful. It is cleansing, strengthening and gives you a cardio workout.

*Beginners are welcome* – you will be guided by the teacher to work at your perfect level (included in our timetable is Synergy Yoga)

Ashtanga

This is a style of yoga codified and popularized by K. Pattabhi Jois during the 20th century. It is often promoted as a modern-day form of classical Indian yoga.  Furthermore, it consists of certain sets of formulated movements (series) and is a strong and deeply healing practice, which also recommends ethical living & regular meditation.

ISHTA

Founded in the 1960’s by Kavi Yogiraj Swarananda Mani Finger in South Africa, ISHTA is one of South Africa’s oldest continuing schools of yoga. Blending the ancient and contemporary sciences of Hatha, Tantra and Ayurveda, it caters to the individual student’s needs with intelligence and authenticity. Whether you are looking for improved strength and flexibility, clarity of mind, or a deeper spiritual practice, ISHTA YOGA provide you with the tools needed to bring inspiration into every moment of your being.

Kundalini

Based on the teachings of Yogi Bhajan, Kundalini Yoga is a system that is suited for students who want deeper healing, incorporating physical and energetic (pranic) work. This tradition of yoga is deeply spiritual, and allows you to connect to you personal spiritual beliefs through its framework. Kundalini yoga is a powerful and deeply transformative system, and makes used of mantra (chanting), Kriya (physical movement), pranayama (breathing teachniques) and meditation.

OPTIONAL EXTRA: It is tradition to wear white in a kundalini class, and to bring a head covering (scarf, shawl, beanie, etc). This is optional.

Kundalini Sadhana  

The traditional pre-sunrise yogic practices to cleanse the mind, energise the body, and bless the heart.  Begins with Japji (a 20min long sacred Gurmukhi verse/poem), followed by a physical Kundalini yoga practice, rounded off   with the chanting of the Aquarian Mantras as the sun begins to rise.

This session is for those who wish to connect deeply to their spirituality, and to learn the Kundalini forms of meditation.

*CLASS RUNS ON A DONATION BASIS, and is open to anyone*

 Restorative   

Deeply healing, and slow. Used for people who have experienced large amounts of trauma, anxiety, or physical pain. Restorative yoga, like Yoga Therapy, aims at healing the body in a very polite, kind and gentle way. Often makes use of yoga props and tools to support the body.

*All levels welcome. Lovely for injuries, elderly persons, or people seeking a very calming practice*

Yin                 

The yoga of stillness. Postures are held for longer periods of time (3-5 minutes) to allow for deeply transformative benefits on the body, and nervous system. Yin yoga is a beautiful and very special practice which allows us to process emotions and thoughts, and find our deep inner stillness.

Beginner Yoga         

While all our classes cater for ANY and all levels of fitness or experience, we do offer classes aimed specifically at beginners! Now you can learn the moves, take your time, ask questions in class, and clarify those points we all get too shy to ask from time to time.

Pregnancy Yoga      

Yoga is one of the most special gifts a pregnant mother can receive. Pre-Natal yoga helps to keep mommy’ body healthy, and her mind at peace. Breathing techniques will certainly be an asset to the birthing process. Unborn babies benefit hugely from moms who yoga. Benefits include increased oxygen, blood flow, and soothing energy to calm and restore.

(Please Note: check with your GP or OBGYN before doing Pre-Natal Yoga. Safe moms are happy moms!)

Kids Classes            

We offer several mind/body modalities for kids! These include Sunday Fun days, Yoga, Story Telling, Dance Classes (ballet, modern, hip hop and more). We also have regular Holiday Clubs which include yoga, crafts, nature walks, delicious healthy snacks and endless fun!  Yoga is especially wonderful to teach young humans how to develop calm, centered minds, and happy, shining hearts

Pilates                       

Pilates focuses on emphasizing your body’s core — the abdomen, obliques, lower back, inner and outer thigh, butt, etc. It develops much of what exercisers need. That is, strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, coordination, balance, and good posture.  The discipline emphasizes correct form instead of going for the burn. With so many exercise variations and progressions, you may have a hard time getting bored with Pilates.

Tai Chi Qi Gong       

An ancient system of energetic wellbeing. Tai Chi Qi Gong is able to help heal the body, or keep it strong and supple. Balance, ease of movement, and deep inner strength are just a few benefits.  Also, learn how to move your personal bio-energetic field (Chi) in a way that increases longevity, prevents illness, and deeply centers the mind.

Nia

Nia cardio-dance workouts combine 52 simple moves with dance arts, martial arts. Also, healing arts to get you fit in 60 minutes – body, mind, emotion, and spirit. Nia is non-impact, practiced barefoot, and adaptable to individual needs and abilities

Budokon       

Meaning “way of the spiritual warrior” in Japanese, Budokon is essentially a fluid, and organic way of returning the body to a natural, instinctive and super-fit state. In fact, a key part of Budokon comes from adopting animal postures.  It merges martial arts, yoga & meditation. A class can get you burning up to 900Kcal in 60min!

Bootcamp     

Body Weight Bootcamp training uses the natural elements of the outdoors (inside in winter), as well as your own body’s weight, strength and endurance to sculpt you into a lean and sexy, healthy machine!  Using the body the way nature designed it to, and lots of energized fun

Meditation

Meditation is a way in which we clean and clear the mind of mental “junk”, organize our thoughts, and streamline our lives. It has the power to help us respond better to life, and to live calmer, more centered existences. Furthermore, meditation helps train the busiest minds to focus on more positive thoughts, and then learn how to settle down. Whatever you want from meditation, it can give you. It will be the greatest gift you ever gave yourself!
