Miss Earth South Africa, Ilze Saunders and regional semi finalists across South Africa have been busy with their community clean up campaigns and food gardens projects to bring about food security awareness and community participation…
Over the weekend regional semi finalists from across Gauteng and the North West joined hands with the community of Mondeor as they cleaned up the Bloubos Spruit, and set their sights on a green South Africa!
This has been an annual project for the past five years and it sees not only community building, a renewed ownership of public spaces but an opportunity to practice active citizenship. Almost 100 volunteers joined the clean up including Cllr Sergio Dos Santos, Generation Earth council members from the Oprah Winfrey Academy for Girls, Sacred Heart, Wits Council members as well as St Johns.
Valpre Spring Water kept everyone refreshed and former Miss Earth South Africa Ashanti Mbanga joined the festivities too. Last week was National Environment Week and regional ambassadors met and decided they will continue with clean up campaigns, greening projects at schools and just this past Saturday they joined the Mayor of Joburg, Parks Tau, Pikitup and Lead SA for the #TeamUpToCleanUp campaign which aims to drive active citizenship and community participation to clean up their areas.
