Don’t Let Bad Breath Get In The Way This Valentine’s Day

bad breath

What is that smell? It’s love of course! Love is definitely in the air in February. And hopefully it’s the only thing in the air this Valentine’s Day! Did you know that 35% – 45% people in the world have some level of halitosis or bad breath?

Yes! According to the Bad Breath Institute many of the 35%-45% don’t even know that they do.

Almost everyone suffers from bad breath at some point in their life and while it’s not considered a medically serious problem on its own, it can impact your self-confidence and cause considerable embarrassment.  Even more importantly, the presence of bad breath (also known as halitosis) can indicate more serious underlying oral hygiene problems that, if left untreated, could give you a lot more to worry about than your upcoming date. As such, it makes sense to get to the bottom of the issue now as you don’t want bad breath getting in your way this Valentine’s Day.

In fact, in a survey of 5,000 singles conducted by Match.com, 43% said fresh breath mattered the most before a date, where bad breath is among the 3 most unattractive traits in dating prospects.

So, first thing’s first… What causes bad breath?

Lifestyle choices can influence breath, like diet, alcohol and smoking. Illnesses such as diabetes, sinus infections or allergies, can also contribute. However, a staggering 80% of bad breath comes from within the mouth. A major cause is bacteria that thrive on the tongue, as well as on and between teeth. This is why quick fixes, like gum or mints, only act as short term foul breath remedies as you have to remove bacteria to truly beat bad breath.

Want to know how to get rid of bad breath long-term? Working on your oral hygiene routine is a great place to start. A complete oral hygiene routine is the only way to keep foul-smelling bacteria (not to mention gum disease) in check. This means brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice daily, ideally with an electric toothbrush which removes 7 x more plaque than a manual toothbrush thanks to its unique brush technology. But if you think oral hygiene stops there, you’re much mistaken.

Flossing is an absolute must if you’re a halitosis sufferer

It’s the only way to remove those tiny bits of food that become wedged in between the teeth. Floss once daily as a general rule, but if you’re experiencing a foul breath episode, keep a pack of floss in your pocket and use it after meals to keep bacteria at bay. If you’re not a fan of fiddly dental string, you might find that Airflossing is better suited to your needs – it uses air and microdroplet technology to clean the spaces in between your teeth with minimal fuss and effort.

What’s more, to really give bad breath its marching orders, you need to banish the bacteria that have accumulated in your tongue. For a targeted and thorough approach, you’ll need a dedicated tongue cleaner – an innovative electric tongue brush which contours to the tongue’s ridges and grooves to clean away foul breath bacteria below the surface.

For added reassurance, combine this with an antibacterial tongue spray which is clinically proven to kill bad breath bacteria and neutralise odours instantly – leaving your mouth feeling fresh and clean.

What about oral care products?

It’s also important to note that many oral care products merely mask the oral smell instead of addressing the cause. Some contain alcohol, which dries out the mouth and exacerbates the problem so it’s important to look for an alcohol-free breath care system specifically designed to kill bacteria at the source, and neutralise the gases responsible for bad breath.

If your foul breath is persistent, it could be a sign of something more serious so make sure you visit your dentist if you are concerned about your bad breath – for expert advice.

So, there you have it – simply improving your daily oral health routine can be an effective bad breath remedy. With consistent brushing, flossing, tongue cleaning with a spray and rinsing with alcohol-free mouthwash, you can kill bad breath bacteria and feel fresher for longer.

So, kiss bad breath goodbye this Valentine’s Day, and say hello to close up moments!
