Diabetes has no defined cure. All you can do is manage it with diet and lifestyle and, often, medication. But, one great way you can manage your diabetes is with essential oils. You can use these in various ways to manage body composition, improve overall digestive wellness and improve insulin sensitivity.
What exactly is lavender oil?
Lavender oil is indeed one of the most used essential oils. It is most valued for their fragrance and versatility. This oil is distilled from lavender flowers and is known for its antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antifungal and antibacterial properties. Some of the most commons uses for this oil include cleansing bruises cuts and skin irritations, calming the body and mind as well as, relieving migraines and headaches.
If you don’t like lavender, it’s understandable. Usually this dislike is because of the odor with a flat, one-dimensional fragrance that gives headaches used in synthetic products such as cosmetics, candles and air fresheners. This is not lavender itself but a chemical compound that mimics the smell. Also, try to avoid lavandin which is often sold as lavender oil.
How lavender oil helps diabetics
Locally grown lavender is used in Tunisian traditional medicine for health support. In a study conducted by Tunisian scientists, they used lavender oil to treat the diabetic rats for 15 days.
These researchers found that lavender oil helped protect the diabetic rats against weight gain, metabolic illness, depletion of antioxidants, liver and kidney dysfunction, lipoperoxidation and of course blood glucose increases. All these factors are diabetes hallmarks.
The researchers concluded that the potent antioxidants in lavender oil promote diabetes prevention and relief including long term health. Hopefully, one day, lavender oil will be the standard for diabetic prevention!
How do you use lavender oil?
I love the smell of lavender oil. It’s great to use topically on your skin. But this is not the only reason why I use it. It’s incredibly calming and also promotes skin health due to its high antioxidant content.
All you have to do is massage a few drops of lavender oil onto the skin around your ears and throat. Also, you can add a few drops of the oil to your bath water and soak for up to an hour to reap the same benefits. You’ll be amazed at the benefits.
