With Easter just around the corner here is timely advice on how to help your pet beat the battle of the bulge rather than indulging with sweet treats or chocolate (which can be toxic for cats and dogs). Sister Cindy du Preez is a veterinary nurse (based in Pretoria) who has helped scores of her patients reach and maintain a healthy weight.
If your dog is driven mad with constant itching, scratching, ear flapping and licking, you are not alone. It is estimated that more than 50 percent of allergy cases in pets are caused by flea and environmental allergens like pollens, moulds and house dust mites. Furthermore, scratching damages the skin, allowing allergens to penetrate, which could potentially lead to infections and create a vicious cycle notoriously difficult to eliminate or control.
Mbombosi (or Bubbles) was brought to the Mdzananda Animal Clinic with severe mange and open sores from scratching. Her owner brought her to be euthanized because she no longer wanted her because she looked ugly. Dr Blessing and Sr Ros took one look at her sad little eyes and wagging tail and refused to euthanize. Instead she was admitted to hospital where she was treated for the mange condition.
