Once again, we come across one herb that has been sadly under utilized by all of us for far too long. It’s called Uva Ursi, and, similar to cayenne pepper in our last post, it is a herb that can do so much for our bodies.
Uva Ursi is commonly called bearberry. Used for centuries in folk medicine, the herb is still among the most popular today for relieving kidney and bladder disorders, including infections, inflammation, and kidney stones. However, it has many other health benefits, and Life Retreat presents them now.
Uva Ursi is known to support the kidney’s ability to remove toxins and waste. It also fights infections and inflammations of the urinary tract. Uva Ursi is still the most popular herb in use today for relieving kidney and bladder infections, inflammation and kidney stones. The benefits of this product are diuretic, astringent and antiseptic properties. It reduces the accumulation of uric acid, high concentrations of which have been associated with conditions such as gout and kidney stones.
Urinary tract infections target the bladder and kidneys. Uva Ursi helps to reduce the bacteria causing such infections and increases urine output to expel waste from the body. The combination with marshmallow root assists in the elimination of toxins from the organs. It encourages the removal of toxins and wastes.
Uva Ursi’s diuretic, astringent, and antiseptic properties work well for urinary and renal (kidney) dysfunction. It reduces the accumulation of uric acid, high concentrations of which have been associated with conditions such as gout and kidney stones. Uva Ursi also increases blood flow through the kidneys, where impurities and waste products are filtered out of the blood supply. If the kidneys cannot efficiently process toxins and waste, the accumulation of minerals can build up to create kidney stones.
Urinary tract infections primarily target the bladder and kidneys. Uva Ursi helps to reduce the bacteria causing such infections, and increases urine output to expel waste from the body.
Uva Ursi has been reported to be effective against E. coli. Preparations made from bearberries act anti-bacterially in vitro against Proteus Vulgaris, E. coli, Urea plasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aerginosa, Friedlander’s pneumonia, Enterococcus faecalis, and Streptococcus strains, as well as against Candida albicans. The anti-microbial effect is associated with the aglycone hydroquinone released from arbutin (transport form) or arbutin waste products in the alkaline urine.
Diuretics are often prescribed to treat high blood pressure. However as they also deplete the body’s potassium, it is advisable to increase your intake of fresh vegetables and bananas. Diuretics are also prescribed for congestive heart failure. However, consultation with a doctor before using Uva Ursi for these reasons is advisable.
Allantoin contained in Uva Ursi is an active ingredient in many over the counter creams to treat cold sores, herpes, and vaginal infections.
