Here are four ways that hitting the yoga mat can boosts your heart health.



1. It keeps you active

Yoga helps promote physical activity, which is perfect for your heart. People who are inactive are at double the risk of having heart problems than those who do exercise, says Dr Stastny, a medical doctor and yoga therapy instructor at Mount Royal University. What’s more, yoga improves your strength and flexibility, which in turn enhances your heart health!

2. It calms inflammation

Inflammation is your body’s natural way of responding to stress or injury. And according to Dr Hana Stastny, inflammation is also at the core of most pathologies, including cancer and yes – heart disease.

3. It reduces stress levels

Did you know stress makes your brain release adrenaline into your system. This then puts your system into what’s known as the “flight or fight” mode. The result? Increased heart rate and high blood pressure. This response is good when you’re facing a threat, but if you’re constantly feeling stressed, it takes a toll on your cardiovascular system. Therefore, leading to heart problems.

4. It helps lower blood pressure

Long-term high blood pressure can wreak serious havoc on your heart by damaging blood vessel walls. In the long run, this leads to plaque build-up which can narrow or block your arteries. According to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, this is a leading cause of stroke and heart attack. Because yoga helps lower your blood pressure, your risk is definitely reduced.
